DRIVER EDUCATION
OBTAINING A UTAH DRIVER LICENSE
Getting a permit before taking the class is encouraged but not a requirement. To get one, go to: https://zerofatalities.com/learner-permit/
* Classroom Requirement - Complete 27 hours of classroom time and pass the class. (2 Absences or less)
-Attend Mandatory Zero Fatalities Parent Night Presentation
- Cost: $140 ($160 in the Summer).
* Range Driving - Complete 3 Range Drive sessions.
- Each Range session is 2 hours.
- Ranges are held in the parking lot between the gymnasium and football stadium.
* Road Driving - Complete 5 Road Drive sessions (or equivalent to meet the BEHIND-THE-WHEEL and OBSERVATION hour requirements).
- Includes 3 hours behind-the-wheel and 6 hours of observation time with an instructor.
- 4 Practice Drives + 1 Road Skills Test Drive.
- Must Pass the Road Skill Test with an instructor.
- Mr. Kapele must see the student's current Learner Permit & the $140/$160 Driver Education Class Fee Receipt from the Copper Hills High main office before Road Driving with an instructor will be scheduled.
* Complete the Traffic Safety & Trends Exam as required by the DLD.
* Complete the 40 practice hours of driving with parent/guardian (10 hours of the 40 hours should be night/dark hours).
* Be at least 16 years old and have had a permit for 6 months.

Summer 2026 Drivers Education registration starts March 9, 2026, on-line @ 7:00 am
Details:
- Cost: $160
- Dates: Monday-Friday June 8-26th, NO CLASS ON MONDAY, JUNE 15
- (14 total class days). Attendance is required.
- Please choose one of the following sessions:
- Session 1: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
- Session 2: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Location: Portable #3 by the Drivers Ed. Range
- Instructor: Kai Kapele
Please note that there are no make-up classes, and students must attend every class on time to fulfill the required 27 hours as mandated by Utah Law. Range Drives will be scheduled outside of class hours.
- Capacity: 36 students per session, registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Eligibility: Priority given to Copper Hills students, then open to students from other schools if space allows. Student and Birthdate eligibility will be verified; if the student is not a CHHS student that turns 16 by October 15, 2026, registration will be cancelled and payment refunded.
Students are strongly encouraged to obtain their learner permit from the Drivers License Division and bring it on the first day of class. They can acquire this permit as soon as they turn 15.
