Xbox okay so this is your official day make sure you call this day for all Juniors March 9th is your testing and are you talking about that devices does a ride buses your bus schedule is going to be the exact same in the morning you'll hop on the bus you'll get all your stops joke Copper Hills and we really don't want you to walk around and socialize in the hall before because then you run the risk of being late for your test you like for the test you won't be allowed in what's the door shots and they start reading instructions it's game over you you're going to have to take the test at some other point and pay for it at that point you'll take the test until 11:15 or 11:30 somewhere around there and just depends on if we have any buses late etcetera be able to have whatever you want in the cafeteria if you don't eat in the cafeteria just want to drive home cool totally open to that and you can just breathe and relax after you're done with the overall there is it is another. turn off the important as Juniors and did you might think while this might be the only opportunity I have to really take a test and do well before us is counselors we want to be able to set you up for Success so if you feel like you didn't score rate on this desk then let's look for another one what I tell my students is at the end of your junior year the first one that you can take in July or June typically it's June right after school I'll recommend take a nap because you're already going to be in a 1 Test Weiser actually you're going to understand the format a little bit better you're going to understand how you work under stress or under pressure with the test and it's just another really great option so that you have your results by the time you start school back up in August and do your applications for sir universities did you have the early application process in the state is Brigham Young a day they start really early for everybody else their applications are due really in October is when we start that but if you put off your second test until any of the year you run the risk of not having those scores back reason that matters is because of scholarship money if you are trying to get a scholarship for a quality score on your act and a good GPA if you don't get the early enrollment or the hit the early admissions deadlines then you won't be eligible for that money so that's why it's important to take the test a second time if you're not pleased with it so I'm going to be in March so I can test if you're going with my navigation register before for the ACT. Org register I think the registration opens up in March for the June one you sign up and be good to go get any questions on planning the test or any logistical stuff which is dates you can also choose to take it if you go to an open enrollment school like Dixie or suu or Salt Lake Community College you can take it all the way until you technically already made it at that University or the college really is just for the early you guys know if you heard about scholarship indexes how that really works what they do is they put you in a big box okay student asks has a 3.8 GPA and a 27 on the ACT this is how much free money we're going to give them it's really important that you look at that if you're trying to get all your car paid for right there Strasse with private scholarships what does index score that a lot of the schools do is free money based off of your GPA and off of your act that's a really really great resource if any point in the process from here until October of next year you're not exactly how to maximize the money you're receiving please schedule an appointment to visit with your counselor for us is counselors will be visiting with most of our juniors in March sometime before quarter 3 end so it will be the second week of March in the third week of March probably I will try to get to everybody now if you're not in school then we can talk to you and we'd love to have you sign up to see us so that we can get you all the information about planning for the next step really it is but at the same time there's a lot of steps that we can take to help you know alleviate some of the stress there's always another test you can take we can talk about finances we really just want you to feel prep for college cuz that's kind of the whole point and why you're here with the ACT test if you want to be successful so we'll be happy to help you do that all right. Bottom line I'm going to stress it begins if you are late you're not going to be allowed into the ACT okay this is important slide and typically the history class has already been talked to but you're going to do the enrollment on the registration through history class is anybody here virtual student that's just here for the practice agencies. The real John Smith after we'll talk about registration tomorrow because can you go through and create your account do your registration if you've missed it it's not the end of the world or if you miss it this week so I'm going to get sick we have to go in quarantine or whatever we can certainly still help you register that's going to be done in the Counseling Center testing coordinator her name is Shelly nut you can remember to just talk to your counselor and say okay I didn't I wasn't here who do I go to and what point is exactly where you need to go in your history classes for you're Skyler to your parents that are worried have them double-check your email is also a letter that was sent home to parents that told about the registration process for virtual students at the same a letter home you should have received it last week if you haven't received it might be there today or tomorrow but otherwise history class tomorrow all right so this Parts really important as well if you get here and you say I'll shoot I don't know a way that you can identify me then you're going to be running around crazy in the morning and again run the risk of not being able to take the exam driver's license better you have a driver's license bring that in as soon as he's just fine because we can then identify you a counselor can either confirmed they know you through your student ID we can work with the attendance office but that's the last the Jeopardy really want you to come to bed with tell your friends or tell those with your classes or or in history tomorrow ideas really important drivers license for free I listen to be obvious but no cell phones allowed in testing even if your cell phone goes off like alarm or something like that your test will be dismissed and you won't be able to be scored on it so my recommendation is just leave your cell phone in your locker leave it in your car if you're not going to be checking it during that time really even there brakes I wouldn't check it in case you forget to turn in your no vibrate off or whatever or your ringtone then you come back in it rings even if you're halfway through not scored on what you've already done it's all the be really really aware of what keep track of those up from your teachers will do. And I just would be really sure to the communicate that with other City running a car Wissahickon I keep in your locker or can keep in your car whatever you're worried about your car being broken into and I'll put it there calculator will provide calculators the basic calculators of a functional you know fraction calculator with divide multiply subtract will be provided and that's really all you need you can bring another calculators will be really wear if it's on this list and not allowed then you're going to have to turn that calculator into the teacher or whoever the Proctor is and you'll have to use one of those standard calculator so make sure that you're here you should be good if you're taking Sandra copperheads mouth and it's just going to work this time all right do this next section about selecting colleges and universities on here you might think we'll I don't even know I'm a junior I don't know where I'm going to college while I put these down they really wanted but it down to make it easier for you in the future you don't have to put down Yale or Stanford or classes like that or a school like that but down schools that might be considering at this point if you have 8 options at school with music counselor and I I would encourage students to keep their options open but maybe you think about this weekend or in the next couple weeks what were the reason why you want to stay in the state of Utah you want to go outside of Utah as a private school is it a junior college is that the university is in a liberal arts college that you can put those on there again turn the population that says I don't know what I want to do I don't know what's going to go to I probably start with some standard Utah schools of course this is no knock on any squad don't mention but maybe you can put one in Norton the North Utah State Valley Community College University of Utah and and something in the Southlake Dixie or suu that way they can just automatically have your test scores and know what you ignore you got on all the areas as well as your composite score why that matters why this matters that you put schools down is not talked about the scholarship index those are sent automatically to them so that then when we upload are you send over your transcript they look at that and that's a cool the student has that 3.8 minutes 7 cuz we already have the squirts already been reported to it of course it's going to be on your transcript as well as counselors in school but it just kind of jumped directly to that school this is another important piece if you are taking concurrent enrollment class is your or you're going to take the next year please put Salt Lake Community College down the reason that's important is because you have classes that we offer that require a test score in math pacifically or reading if you haven't had those requisite scores and you have to retest for that so certain math classes and then your English language 2010 as well as political science 1100 if you're offering next year will be the ones that require the scores for any questions on this flight or or on Sunday goes to college so your room assignments are going to be off so this will be at some of the stress from the Mad Dash right at the beginning of shut down March 9th is going to be posted in the Commons area it'll be across the from the counseling center as well so you know exactly which room you're going to go to I mean if your planner and you like to just know like to know exactly what to expect really is good information for you but I won't spend too much time on that all right with your other teachers the order of the deaths are you as you move forward this is going to be the exact order of of the test right here it's a pretty good breakdown and some are 1411 question for a minute others are not as you can see as we talked about some chess strategies keep in mind your timing when you do a practice then Practice Act or practice exam or study session I would work according to this timing table okay because if you are practicing the English corset fortune and it's taking you 70 minutes to complete the portion you're going to be missing a lot of questions because your timing is very off okay that's why this part is important is your questions are for this we won't do a writing portion but in the future if you choose to do a writing portion it's an extra 40 or 45 minutes and you have one question and you choose you take that time and for the duration of that you right now you're at your 4S and Waffles require them for some of you I thought this was our writing optional is everybody doing writing yeah yeah I think we're just pretty As you move forward so the one you taking Junior the one you take at the beginning of the year that's the one you're going to need to select riding if your University requires that not all universities require it so if you're stressed about look into it first before you sign up for it as you prepare for this we'll talk about a couple other options for your preparation whether it's through act because they're free resources or she moved or this work with this time in if some of you have siblings previously taken the act or friends from last year or friends here at the school that are seniors that have taken you know you might want to shoot them a text or just ask him a question and say hey how is it you know how I am with my ask what are your thoughts about me completing this and then you can just move forward 40 minutes white queso finishing a section of the ACT this is important because make you aware that you're not penalized for bubbling everything in on the ACT okay or advice to you is to Bubba every single question in as you're running out of time as your maybe not sure of an answer here there that's okay Zimbabwe then I guess it's better than no putting nothing there in that bubble she so that's the first portion is the exams the Proctors while walking up and down the hall way or the highway that aisle and no down what number you finished on so please finish it completely don't finish don't go to like number 31 on a on a 35 question and then filling those bubbles later because your exam will be qualify for cheating it's happen before it happens almost every act that somebody bubbles in post time and then they don't get a score okay I'll be really aware of that and adobada spawn point is you're going to get a five minute warning before the end of each test so with this one the Highlight is Teachers may choose that what we do is we have a big clock of her up front we write on the board and that's your timing watch without an alarm or just verify that every once in awhile don't be glued to that clock right don't let it rule your test but make sure you're at least aware of it now if they don't do that and they say oh shoot we have one minute and you just throw anything in your head that's okay already prepped for this already have my bubbles done if you're halfway through obviously you spent a little too much time on something or something so when you decide minute warning it's a good to think okay how much time do I have how much time is a my taking per question if you have half of them left then I would choose maybe a letter of the day or go back to your notes and see what you do you need to hurry in Babylon by letter of the day I mean you know my last name is Bennett so I might say okay my letter of the day because I'm running out of time to be so I'm just going to start going every B answer I or you can go back to make your educated guesses or do you not your system is really a you can choose it but the timing is what matters this is pretty easy it's just a little bit of time before 3D instructions right don't get bored with it just let that be a time where you can call me or down through some deep breathing or whatever helps you relax if you're feeling anxious use that in the beginning of the end of your test you're going to want to sing over I'm done with this resolved account all the exams Preston Castle bunk beds to take a little bit of time so be patient and it just takes longer if you're up and about in the bathroom but just be aware of your teachers I guess RN verses about anything we've gone over so far alright standard thoughts about this before a night before a CT how many by show of answer are feeling anxious about the AC how many people are not feeling anxious but I just know it. And really it's ball if I mean you can choose to be anxious about it or we can kind of prepare for what you're doing now at the ACT prep is your kind of helping your anxiety as you learn more about some test-taking strategies you go over some science and math and they give you some pointers so I think everybody in here is going to be alright as you're putting into work the night before even the week before you know if you okay we have a team dinner the night before or the same deal with the ACT is a meal that's going to fill you up like feeling like a food or anything like that with too much sugar or are you eat way too much eat something healthy I get plenty of sleep I know you might be feeling anxious so I might be good to look at some apps whether it's the Calm app for weather like some deep breathing exercises or just play talking it through with your your parents or Guardian The Sibling a friend there's a lot of different things that you can do to help, Nick, call me more these are things that we really focus on a good breakfast, because when you get in there you're going to be super where body as you fill in the bubbles and when you're hungry and your stomach is going to be growling if you didn't eat anything and I could make you be more self-conscious about it as you do the test I know that's a small thing maybe a weird thing to consider but definitely eat and then let's see here worried about the timing over the alarm with your parents go over the alarm with a friend like all them in the morning if you're there ride or whatever that you're not stressing about it but I think that you'll be good to go designers down here the bottom interesting or good things a lot of it's like more unless a therapeutic but more like in the moment anxious call me but if you're anxious leading up to it of course cross Santa Teresa a lot of counselors is process your thoughts because our thoughts if we don't really talk to him out or address them that's when my anxiety increases right now we're going to talk more about actual test strategies some of this is going to be a little repetitive but I want to make sure we're addressing what you need to have address of your other session to take until 3:30 or 4 between the two and have you guys seen this before if you could go and do this really quick as it'll take 5 minutes ish probably like 20 more seconds and then I get back to this all right here we go do this information going to be passed on to the other content teachers the lake and you know work this weekend tutu dresses question of course if you have questions again please alright so this is the end X table University of Utah dixie they have scholarship index you can kind of gauge where you're at as a student if you feel like you know there's room to grow room today and I'll do better right this is where I the numbers you need been there this is free money so it really is 200% you don't have to do anything except for applying to the school before the early enrollment deadline has passed act and GPA all right we already talked about this two things I want to mention is comfortable shoes and wearing a jacket right and it's guys and girls right you'll get into the exam and I would do the second portion here to think it's cold in here have that be a distraction you know you don't want to worry about on my shoe I know whatever's more slides flip flops whatever is your thing why is there a rabbit and sander Aurora the structure of the ACT this is a big deal and that's why I gave you the times earlier if you really want to be aware of the times for a lot of reasons the structure of the ACT again is important so you can say I know what to expect I know it's coming anxiety decreases and we perform better if you know what I mean right. He's kind of projection of things that ever happened and we're just worried about you going to save a lot of time by just knowing what to expect and having your own personal strategy your strategy hey I'm going to go and just might be for the last 10 questions and then if I get to mall racing as I get there or it might be and I'm running out of time for the rest of the time lot of different options stop the computer section for not going over the computer instructions but that's going to be in the 20 minutes of reading basically run the person up front might be 15 minutes so expect to be kind of board for that but don't you're there I can't repeat that enough is if you move ahead with when they're reading instruction you might accidentally feel something out that you're not supposed to know not everybody in here is capable and so on knocking any of that you're listening skills or your intelligence but it happens every ATT where somebody will then say well why didn't I get my score back when we look back and see because they feel that uses or they didn't have the right address or their name is spelled wrong let me know if it does happen so make sure that as they read the instructions you're following with them don't jump ahead right you're going to be tempted to do so cuz you're going to stay awhile this is easy and I'm capable but I still would not do that because then your pops was going pause time or recheck it was going to be a little statement as you take the ACT in the future that says yeah I agree to this I'm not going to cheat no this is On My Honor pipe you and you sign it so make sure you do that as well don't mess anything up if you're unsure if because you're feeling it out raise your hand so they can help you immediately it's so much easier to get help right away then it is to get your scores processed and then work drug testing coordinator that takes a lot longer it's going to delay or could nullify your score depending on what you are minutes alright this is a huge strategy-wise you think about while I'm not going to know all the answers right that's pretty typical that you don't know all the ants let's make some educated guesses or let's make the best gas possible riding your test book is allowed to remember that writing on the test not allowed to take notes on the A B C or D portion take notes the reason that you do that is if you can read a question you can say this is a real doozy and I'm not going to be able to figure this one out right away I don't know what they'd be a or b as you go through your the circle that in your book work Circle those talk to let your brain process in a little bit and then get back to it okay don't rush through it don't feel like you have to know the exact answer before you move on to the next one okay go with whatever feels fluid in normal to you is that mean going to read every question and if you know the answer right away You're Going To Rome Circle and you know a hundred percent right do that otherwise really use this okay all right again question. Of order is is very helpful because if you're stumped on question number 2 and spend 10 minutes on it then you wasted a good portion of quarter or half your time defending what's the last I guess do you like spending your 1 minute or 2 minutes on it after you read it here either not understanding the question or you're not sure which answer it is think about it in a couple different ways think okay do I know which answer is not can you price out B&D or whatever or if you really have no clue just circle the question think I'm going to have to just guess at the end like it doesn't matter just come to wasting my time thinking more about this then I should okay skip it move on to the next one make sure your time it's better all because you're skipping through and getting those right sometimes this is a it's a great strategy is finding the wrong answer first right away you know how that's looks pretty. I don't think that's right easy I don't have to worry about it you're even if there's three answers left you know which one it's not it's going to increase your no guessing abilities by 8% and that's good that they'll be okay over duration of the test if you're not guessing too much alright so the best way to bubble bubbles really you do need to mark them completely and fully okay so make sure you're doing that don't Circle 2 you have to race they're going to read this to you any instructions but I erase completely 100% you erase everything about it you're going to be going to help your score for sure on that or either Xander Elijah here doesn't need to be for a car just making sure all right so what does on the Morgan Page at a time on English and math and a passage of time so this is important because using your book bag with your bubble sheet just helps you stay like you know people Brown if you're going to choose to skip question in your booklet you really aware that if I'm skipping number 4 remove the number 5 some students get selling their in the rain that they don't skip it on the actual Circle portion okay so then you don't skip for if you do that but like a little line through for the number four or something to help you remember so you don't know answer them completely wrong for the next twenty questions we have to go back and erase them and fill them out and that happened again this is a this is a really important part of of the ACT is that the timing you notice that when I showed that for traffic you were used on 75 minutes for one section 40 minutes for another section play to your strengths and understand I'm I strong with English am I stronger and stronger in science which one am I can I have the think about with the timing okay so this is where you take your skills and what you're really good at and think all right so I need to focus more on biology my biology science instead of not that's a really important aspect of this is me dog but I also know your timing so that you can better address yourself in those sections all right so again we talked about this in the very beginning answer every single thing some tests that are standardized if you fill out an answer then you're going to not receive a a score was going to be marked wrong because you didn't you didn't try but this one's not like that alright this is going to happen to a number of you in this group especially if you're really strong and you know science examples when you finish science with plenty of time left you're going to think well should I go back and look at all then just make sure you're going back in and searching for those that you just weren't sure on 100% right that's why it's important your booklet tomark then you can create a code in your booklet or for yourself or call the number that means that I don't 20% if I know Circle and star and that means I'm debating between overly complicated but maybe one or two things that are going to help you remember are these questions which one are going to be guessing Russians in which ones are going to be educated yeses or informed decisions right so be really aware of that all right do everybody knows with stress when I get to do an example or anything in here about but I will talk about this a little bit more in the future is how do you know ground yourself in the test if you're stressing out about it even the week before the night before so we don't get too into that one I do want to show you a couple all right the act itself is a really good option for studying right you have your books you have internet sites you have a lot of different things but going to ACT score for the ACT test is going to give you information like this what's great about this is at the four practice tests that they provide was you going through you think great how much does it cost for the top right corner at 3 so if you ever see anything that says free and have the date that means it was either a previous test or previous practice test answer key I'm going to give you basic information about you know what to expect what's repair for as you go through again it's going to give you a breakdown of everything can you do some strategies and we're going to be a bit more next time as well how do I set up before test after test what should I expect and the timing of it you're not going to have your test immediately back it's not a two-week turnaround usually we do students at 6 ish weeks well hopefully we get that before I wear on charge of any of that stuff cuz we mail it to them immediately so you know that day we process it and then ship it out later in the afternoon it really were just at the mercy of a CT on their children so we say six weeks we typically get it back in 4 weeks by just so you're aware of your testing and I'm going to get it back immediately all right again reminders about prohibited behavior on Sat sections all right and then you going to get down here and you're going to be able to go over exactly what's going to be on your act booklet or at least are you an idea of what's going to be there cuz it says I'm cool so this is the stuff that I have to write down when is the when I was working at a university and a high school counselor if you're taking the test a third time and your scores are pretty standard or not recommend taking the test anymore not because you're not smart but because obviously you something is not really going to make you all some change and get you know a 10-point higher score so you'll see an increase from test number one to test number two if you've taken you do your first test seriously and then you think okay now I know what to expect do a little bit of studying content areas that I need help on and if you're pretty specific with your studying between the the first test and the second test we're going to see a difference 100% and whenever you go in just a second and whenever you think about index score at the University they're always going to take the highest for guy so even if you don't do as well on the second time you did you take the ACT that's okay I'm not worried about it you're going to be just fine. I recommend taking the whole thing that's right. Org you going to have to take the whole thing if you do it through University sometimes you can do content specific sections recommend doing the whole thing to see if you've been approved the question the question was is the second one free as well we offer only one every year for juniors that's free the second one is I think fiber $50 through act. Org so you either have a disability or you have a 504 plan or something like that or something comes up between this test that you take in March in the next one you take and you need to document that document with the school so that we can back you up if you need extended time on any future test that's really important that you work with are testing coordinator or are School psychologists ensure that you on that list for accommodations who want you to have them if you need them questions then as you go through it's actually a section of English so your picture or not go through but you can print this out you can actually have the hard copy and that's probably what I recommend is just saying okay what do I need to do how do I need to do the spider how big of a struggle was that and you can choose to go with you know whatever subject is your top subject but I would recommend you know if you do struggle in one content area for example take that one over and over or you study resources help you out all right thank you print this out and you do it with your family on a Saturday or you do it you know one portion every single night that's great if I'm going to tell you to choose one or the other I would recommend me on a Saturday all at once with no phone no distractions and having a parent from you or timing yourself and just being really aware not to you no text or response to call me or whatever so that you can know the time back to this kind of exhausting to just sit through the test report if you want to do one more night this week or next week and then put it all together the Saturday before the Sunday before whatever that might be a better way to go than just not doing any sort of practice does you go through get all the information and it goes by section so it's not this isn't just one section and I'll give you the exact everything I want to show you the website that I love for students in general is smooth smooth you probably heard about in the class or to your Copper Hills we slept so they do content specific to do for ACT prep set a reminder as you do one or the other whether it's the all the ACT stuff or just on time specific is a great resource so Wasatch over there on the number three is really important because it helps us understand Austin Channing help with the weekend address in the future Truth or Tuesday next Monday again is we're going to actually go over a practice portion of the ACT you're going to be able to bubble in some things right and we're going to do some tiny so that you're at least aware of what to expect and kind of a strategy that works for you and then we'll review that where we start packing up and going any questions up to here actually if you have questions, call yeah you do yeah great question to leave what do you recommend taking the SAT as well as act or score on the East Coast a like a little bit more sat Library find book individually every school and see which one they prefer honestly most are taken every single every single University so don't worry too much about it but some might be more tailored to your style the question the question was would be beneficial the morning answer even though I'm a soda drinker and I know you guys have a high metabolism is no only because at some point your body is going to crash from that and it could be in test number 3 it could be a number for it could be after I just probably would risk it I'll just make sure you're you're falling water so that is everything screen with system sign up for the second task and we don't we do well in the first one we sign up for the second one, cancel it for an answer is yes there's a time frame and a window in there and I'll show that all the days with you I'll bring the flyer did he give one to everybody so you can actually see the day if you've already signed up for it and you think wow I got a 28 but I think I can do better than you might as well keep it even though 28° score definitely about the Irish good question can you bring water into the test the short answer is yes the long answer is I would drink in your brakes the reason is that if you listen you have a water bottle and you have a Hydro Flask and you actually knock it over and it's loud in a disturbance technically they could kick you out for that if you have like a ray plastic water bottle and it just sits to the side not a big deal but I'll just drink during breaks I think Trevor today will see you next week
