General ACT test taking strategies.

this is some of the basic information I want to make sure that you understand just how long each of them are what you're going to be covering especially when it comes to the details of it is really thinks that you would have covered by your senior year so if you have information on there that you're not sure about or things that you know that I want you guys to remember that you have other opportunities to take the ACT but not for free rice with this one time you guys are preparing for your junior year is paid for by the state and it'll be here at school during the school day English is 75 questions but you only get 45 minutes every room up have a clock up there and they'll also have a downtime I would make sure that on those last five minutes. you are making sure everything is bubble dance we'll talk a little bit about that still talk on grammar and usage punctuation and sentence structure that goes from pre-algebra up to trigonometry and Trust we talked nice wives to and then some things from 3K reading you have reading comprehension you'll be reading a short story so you'll be go back back and forth on answers and questions that they're going to have you look at it and get through a document and answer those questions on that reading and then for science I loved really it's about problem solving and analyzing so when we talk about science true that you know you've taken Biology and chemistry or whatever but you're really actually problem-solving and you will be able to answer those questions even if you haven't taken those specific science class any questions on that part just some ideas to get you started on like chili prepare for a test relieve these are things that probably you know already but making sure you eat before there is a one there's only one break in the middle of the ACT test if somebody needs to leave the restroom or something get the time doesn't stop so if you had to leave you would not be able to make up those that team so by eating before making sure that you are getting a good night's rest and that you have are you still good not to sleep the night before but sleep for a couple of weeks before I'm go to bed at a reasonable time and maybe just put away your phone for that you know 3D before or something or lead studying individual content areas as well as full test so that's why I gave you the $10 if you guys came in after you can come out there some here behind me but you want those cuz they're practice you can actually take in your Park and we're going to go through those in a little bit and then everybody will be assigned on our test day you're going to be able to have find you like what room you're assigned to will be out ahead of time you're going to have just one classroom that you stay in the entire time in your testing information will go to that room for you to be able to test their and I like because then you'll at least know ahead of time where you're going to be nice to get to and at what time but there's a couple of things I do want you to I want you to know that the ACT doesn't indicate how success and but there's a lot of opportunities that or you can gather good information about yourself or your strengths are in things from the ACT test when you come on the day of the test course eat but the biggest thing that we have seen when Juniors time the day of the test is if they are late on the ACT test date if you are late you don't get to get in to take the test and so I just want you two to know that that's been what I've seen the most stressful is when students are running in already they also don't know what room they're assigned to and they just aren't prepared for the test but then you're starting a little bit stressed about it so just arrive a little bit early you will not want to even bring your phone into the room so if you have do you have a way to leave it like a new car or maybe not in the car maybe at home or in a locker or so but if your phone goes off even a timer or anyting you will be disqualified your tests will not be scored even if it had nothing to do with the test so that's the ACT rule Nationwide real for act so I just want to make sure that you're aware of that I would leave your phone they will sometimes they'll check your phone but then you have to go get your phone from wherever they stored it so should I was just electronics and everything at home you just need paper that you also need an ID so you can have your school ID you can have a driver's license if you don't have one you can prepare ahead of time and get from the attendance office they can print a picture of you but not on the morning of because then you can touch in the really those are the three biggest states make sure you're on time has to have an ID and you you are to be assigned to a specific room and leave your electronics backpack everything out the other thing that is kind of interesting as you'll have to like fill out if you'll look at that one that I handed out Backpage is an answer sheet and if you turn it back once it's one page more so the back to Pages it shows you what information you're going to be guided to fill out sometimes students don't know their address maybe they just move whatever make sure you have your address cuz you're going to have to fill that in but the biggest thing is really it feels so frustrating because you look at the paper in your life first name last name that's what I should be doing just during test especially your act or if you're taking the SAT please just wait and follow the Proctor they're going to guide you through each of them and you're going to be if you don't because there's going to be some things that you can't get the right information for they're on different boxes and you have to find that information off your test and put it on your answer document so it'll be frustrating at least it is for me cuz I hey sweetie please on the day of the act just stop just be okay with waiting and filling it out as the Proctor fight you yes I do I just have a few more after you need for someone else so you can also go on to shmoop.com and they have it electronically I personally like paper pencil on some of them so that's why I copies for you guys this is the only one that we're almost out and then if other people didn't get one it's going to be kind of like oh well I just wanted to make sure you guys had at least one but I like the console so I can go through it and just kind of see easier than electronic from you sometimes but you can always go to Snoop Dogg, Those are free you can take act and sat there as well yeah I think those are the main things I want you to know it wasn't Christine I've been to like an account there for about 12 years I worked at Weber State University where the students that were coming in would bring their ACT test you know like to get in and things like that so you have to side perspective on that preparing and utilizing the spin your ACT test and doing well on this one because I don't have to pay for it and just doing your best and not worrying so much because you didn't pay for it you have time between March when you take this and the following so your senior year October you need to be done taking your ACT test when University looking for scholarships and applications like speeding forward because who's thinking College preparation right now I hope you all are right but you were going to actually be applying in September October November those nuts are huge for you guys next year but I want you to recognize that but this is the one time take it for free and then from there on out you have to sign up at a ct.org pay the money find a test site we often do to a year here at Copperfield other than this free Wainwright those are on Saturdays we have to pay to comment and things like that so I love that you guys are preparing ahead of time for this month I would definitely bring your jackets bring layers right like a jacket to go over just in case you're cold whatever you want to be comfortable it's for long time three and a half hours or whatever so I just want to make sure that you have layers that you can wear and that you feel comfortable when you're in there any start can you say it really loud yes I have about 20 up here behind me and you guys are welcome to come and grab one thanks you anything else all right and then there's kind of some strategy specifically to the act so when you're taking the different test some test it goes against you if you have the wrong answer right that is not true for the act so those are some of the things that we're going to talk about right now I do want you to just listen carefully while you're there follows on with restrictions again for each test once you finish the section and it's it's finished like the room culture set of Heaven ever done with english you have to know that as a proctor we're rough were walking around and we're making sure you know like okay didn't finish that whole pasture whatever if you have Blanks on it after that test and then you go back and fill them in your chest will not be so it's really critical for you to just kind of watch the time on each those tests and if it gets down to the time where you're like, I don't know the rest of these answers or whatever just take a minute and look like answer the rest of them but Joan go back and finish it or go back and change answers on a previous test I like it because we usually have the account down clock so you're not really watching awesome actually give you the countdown is how much time is left in the class test about TOEFL question what do you guys do right now if you get you know that it's better if you guess which is true on the ACT what what letter do you chew AEP how many people say B MC so the right answer is whatever you choose to stay with that one answer that they don't show that just stay with the one answer whatever you're going to choose that's your the day just stay with that one if it's something that you don't know and then make sure to answer every question but you can probably talk about it on the side so you can write in your test booklet so you'll have it quit that looks similar to this one right here like really it's a great book like for you guys to take home cuz it kind of gives you an idea of what it's really going to look like and then you have you have the bubble answer key on the back it's so if you want to take the test that are inside you just reply Backpage and then you can take it it's very specifically formatted so that you know exactly what it's going to look like you are a test book that you can write in but it will not be so you can write in your test booklet that everything to go on that answer seed they do like we have to collect your test because he send them back into act they can look at it if they have like reference or a worry about it because you cut it down exactly what test booklet you were you I like they can go back and find out if they needed to but your answers will only be scored off that bubble test so just making sure that even if you like her writing things down in your remember that you have to go over here Bubba and make sure they go the right answer it's it's okay to skip around like if you if you find something that you know like it's a section you're like I'm just not getting these great but just me sure that what you're bubbling in a line so that you don't have to take time to race them and I did that one of your strategies that I'm sure you've heard before is going to wrong answer first if you do not know the answer to that specific test question find what's for sure wrong usually there's two that are like this one or that one make sure that you get rid of the wrong ones first you can also always started and come back to it that's kind of strategies were helpful for me so that I knew that I had answered every question that I knew for sure that I didn't because who out takes time to test I hate to test like I might just give me I probably can do it in that amount of time but I didn't like the feeling of being timed so if that's you to that was a strategy that helps me a lot didn't look at the clock I just did my best and those are things that helps me not to stress so if that's helpful for you and then along the way so that you're not going back trying to move everything to the Bible that will be not as hopeful your timing just manage your time choose the letter of the day for such an educated guess if you really don't know stay with that same letter and check your answers if you get done early sometimes I talked myself out of I talked myself out of a right answer and it really bites me but usually I would catch Little Things sometimes if you're doing the first part of the test and then you go later and you get another test question and it kind of helps you get the right answer to that other one yeah those strategies are really helpful so just take home maybe make a note so that's easy to find that one again if you'd like to go back in and work on a question that you're not sure on and then if you really get stressed you know kind of stretched it back there's a lot of data that says that giving your chest room cuz when we're taking a test we're like this right and scratched but so like putting putting your shoulders back even put your hands behind your chair for just a minute but that changes the chemical balance are in our brains and we don't want you to be in a stress Mo taking the test nobody nobody. like they have lots of data that they watched people's brains as they're firing right if we're stressed and thinking just don't know for me in English I love math I don't like English so that would be more stressful when I was taking that part of the test right but I'm letting you know that if your brain is in like and it's doing that kind of a thing or if you just are trying to shut down you won't be in the Play Store that you need to be read it and to focus and take a minute and answer that question with us you can write so some of the strategies are for me I count backwards by 741 because that takes my friend Lo I can't just do that really fast right so things that are going to help you move down other people used our five senses like look out meaning see what you can see what can you smell hopefully not neighbor but you can do to use your five senses to come back to this Sweet Moments in the chest and I love the idea of it's just an adventure so I have three girls my youngest is a senior this year but I said that to all three of them when they took the ACT I'm sure it's just a new Venture so doing that light to Adventure your brain already is excited it's a different place in your brain that spiring so just think there is still much better than I knew I wasn't getting those for your break so that's something that you can pull on to try and then deep breathing that works for me any questions on this part or strategies did you guys had strategies that you've done that when you're taking a test how old is Cher right cuz I needed some extreme just for a recording I know repeat what you said so if you get stuck on a problem you're going to actually move forward and see if you can answer their questions and then come back if you have more time so that you don't miss working on six or seven that you do know trying to get the one that you didn't know is that pretty good yes please it's where we are going to go over that part next week and I love that so keywords this this test booklet that's in front of you it doesn't matter what you write in their right so underlining a knot or an always or I pick all the ones that don't apply like all of those keywords our minds sometimes over them right so just taking him to underline member make sure that you know anything else these are good all right drive to
